Azerbaijani karatekas achieved new historical success

     Azerbaijani karatekas took 3rd place at 51st European Karate Championship in Montpellier, France. Having won 2 gold and 1 bronze medal, the national team took third place in the tournament, yielded to the hosts - the French and the Spanish team, being ahead of so many of the planet's strongest team.

     4-time European Champion Rafael Aghayev (-75) for the 13th time became the European Champion, broke his personal record. The women’s national team of Azerbaijan represented by Nurana Aliyeva, Ilaha Gasimova, Farida Abiyeva and Irina Zaretsky, beating such titled teams as of Portugal, Russia, Finland and Turkey, reached the final, where defeated Croatia and won the title of champion of the continent. In addition, this result was one of the historical successes of our karatekas.

     Once more record was achieved by a member of the youth national team Roman Heydarov. 17-year-old R.Geydarov, winning the bronze medal in the Kata competition, became the first young prize winner among adults in the statistics of the World Karate Federation (WKF).

     437 athletes from 46 countries participated in the 51st European Championship. In late October, the national team will take part in the world championship to be held in Austria.
